Universal Children's Day 2012
Country Women’s Association calls on Madang to help change the future for our children
On the 20th November 2012, Country Women’s Association (CWA) will be leading a day of events across Madang town to celebrate ‘Universal Children’s Day’. This annual event celebrates the Declaration of the Rights of the Child which was adopted by the United Nations in 1959.
The days celebration will start at 9:30am on Tuesday 20th November at bates Oval, where CWA will be joined by over 400 teachers, children and volunteers from over 15 communities who work with CWA to deliver childhood healthcare and education in remote communities in Madang Province. The float parade will then makes its way to Bates Oval for a morning of fun-filled family activities.
Sophie N’Driwai, Kindergarten Long Ples Coordinator “We were all children once and today is a chance for us to remember that our children are the future of Papua New Guinea and we must work hard to ensure that all our children can access education and healthcare.
“The statistics tell us that children are still not accessing the services that they need in order to develop. Only 60.1% of children are enrolled in Primary school* and Papua New Guinea still has one of the highest under 5 mortality rates in the South Pacific. At CWA, we believe is supporting communities to help turn those numbers around.
“We have two community programs supporting Early Childhood Care and Development, one is our Kindergarten Long Ples, which supports communities to establish kindergartens. The other is our Early Childhood Health Program, which supports parents to understand issues surrounding nutrition and raises awareness of common and preventable diseases that exist in all our communities. We help parents spot symptoms early and seek medical attention or treat it themselves. We also work with communities to reduce the level of violence inflicted on children, which is still far too common in our communities.”
CWA is currently working with over 20 communities and over 700 children, much of CWA’s work is delivered by dedicated and inspirational volunteers who work alongside CWA staff to deliver this unique and successful program.CWA also carry out a weekly vegetable drop to the Children’s Ward in Modilon Hospital to help children make a fast recovery
