Village Health Volunteer Program (VHV)
Overview
CWA’s VHV Program is run in partnership with the National Health Department’s ‘Healthy Island’ concept program, which is promoting the provision of basic health services in remote communities across Papua New Guinea. A key part of that program is to train and support health volunteers to work within their villages to improve the health of people. Our primary focus is maternal and child health. Papua New Guinea has some of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world.
Program Components
Training and Resources
CWA provides training, support and resources to over 34 Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) and 20 Village Birth Attendants (VBA) who work in 38 villages across 3 districts serving approximately 950 people.
Provision of birthing kits
CWA provides VHVs and VBAs with birthing kits, which are used to support mother's during childbirth. The birthing kits are provided with support from Rotary and CWA Queensland.
Awareness raising
CWA raises awareness in communities of the many risk factors that contribute to increased maternal and child mortality.
Advocacy
CWA promotes the rights of women and children through the celebration of international days such as International Women's Day and International Children's Day
