National Women's Day 2013
Celebrating women's roles in the development of Papua New Guinea
National Women’s Day is a chance for everyone to celebrate the contribution our women and girls make to the development of their communities and their country. This contribution needs to be recognized and promoted across villages and towns in Papua New Guinea.
If Papua New Guinea is to develop we must ensure that gender equality continues to be at the forefront of public policy. If women are marginalized and are unable to reach their full potential to contribute to the growth and development of Papua New Guinea, it will be our country’s greatest loss. Women and girls still face many challenges as they go through life; girls are under-represented in our education system, two in three women will experience domestic violence and female political representation is the lowest of any South Pacific nation.
Madang CWA Secretary General, Delma Wadau-Fumadi said: “Today is an important day to celebrate the contribution women are making towards the development of Papua New Guinea. We need our leaders to recognize this and ensure women’s rights are respected in all walks of life. Papua New Guinea is developing fast and as women we must make sure that our contribution is recognized and we are given the opportunities to increase our contribution.”
